I think one big difference is that the objects must be reviewed within 30 days. Many negative reviews from regular users come weeks or months later, when problems start to show up, and they get to experience how the seller/manufacturer deals with faulty product. There is a good chance the first 30 days will provide a positive experience with most products, unless the whole product is of poor design, or does not live up to specifications. It would be great to have the Vine reviewers come back a year later and update their reviews.

In the list below you will find only the companies that I have either used myself (some for a few years!) or personally vetted via email or phone. Most noteworthy is that many if not all require you to sign up with an email (sometimes a phone number as well) and also ask for your public Amazon Profile URL or blog address. While many work with ebay Sellers and Amazon Sellers to get full products and product samples out to Reviewers and influencers, some are in-house product testing programs, or ‘super user programs’ that are run by a company to promote only their brand.

I wish Amazon would just use some common sense and only allow reviews from verified purchasers. It wouldn’t solve everything but it would be much better than wading through all these phony reviews with that same stupid disclaimer at the end of their review.

Update: Amazon Review Sites can no longer require you to leave a review, but they are strongly encouraged. By having a strong Amazon Profile, you’re more likely to have sellers approve you for a discounted product.

As for being attacked, don’t write your review with that fear in mind. You are supposed to be writing for the customer in mind. I wrote a negative review about some probiotics once, and it gets more up-votes than any other product I reviewed recently. I still get asked to review probiotics (which I don’t accept anymore.)

I have noticed another trend of competitors posting fake negative reviews to try and sink new businesses. It works both ways. Best to read the reviews and make your own decision rather than relying on some automated “honesty finding” program.

Another key indicator that a series of product reviews is fake is that the “Customers who bought this also bought the following items” section is littered with products that have no conceivable connection at all to the reviewed product. However, I like writing honest reviews and reviews that actually help people, even if they don’t receive votes for it. I’ve seen some Vine reviewers who were honest, but the majority are not, imo. I’ve seen positive Vine reviews for products where all the non-Vine reviews were poor. So while I’d love to be a Vine member, I don’t think I’m dishonest enough for it.

I will bend over backward to find positive things to say about it, and I will paint it as positively as I possibly can. But if it’s less than quality, I’d rather commit to provide you feedback to that extent directly. And simply not say anything publicly. Is that okay?

I started my e-business 6 months ago, I have my own e-commerce website KelementStore.com, as well as Amazon marketplace store, tried many marketing strategies to promote my own website, such as Google AdWords, social media, referral program, only to realize only Amazon can move some quantity, even when I didn’t do any marketing on Amazon (not eligible as a new Amazon seller). I’m very grateful for the initial 5 star reviews I got, those genuine words quickly brought in sales. Then when the sales grow, bad customers come up, they didn’t like the product or there were misunderstanding, and these people refuse to communicate, just threw you bad reviews. I’ve consulted Amazon customer service on how to deal with such unfair situation, Amazon only removed a couple that violates their review/feedback guideline. Just like we would meet mean people in real life, they exist on the Internet too. I agree with Megan that the best thing to do in such situation is to get more positive reviews to bury the bad ones, but once there’s a bad one, your sales drop, and you seemed to have to search for paid reviews, but will also worry about being caught by Amazon. It’s a painful dilemma, I’m still struggling on the decisions and looking for good reviewers. I become a more active and positive reviewer now, since I know how hard and important it is to maintain a good reputation. Hope the same for every other sellers.

Never had a problem with a review getting rejected. I did have one negative review generate a few dozen downvotes and angry replies from fanboys of the product but the review is still up there to be seen (granted it is buried under the downvotes).

I finally remembered to respond to this! I just wrote this email to a Seller. They reached out to me with something I wasn’t interested in, so I found an item in their store I was interested in reviewing (and had a need for.) The URL to the product has been redacted, but you get the point.

Twice in the past 3 months I’ve been charged for the exact same order. The first time was 3 duplicate charges and the second time it was 1 duplicate. They do give you the authorization code but due to the error it takes my bank a good 5 days to give the money back. It isn’t the bank’s fault but it’s frustrating nonetheless.
