i am a reviewer i get things for free or at a discount and test the product thouroughly and I don’t care if i got it for free or at a discount if it is bad i say it is bad. i got a book for free and looked up some of the phrases because it just didn’t sound right and found that 90% of the book was plagerized and I put that in my review. if something is good i will say it is good but if it is not i don’t feel any obligation to anyone to say it is good when it isn’t. i get emails from the company the day I receive it to please leave the review but I wait and try it out i will wash things a few times and let my kids play with stuff for a while before I review it. All the reviewers are not leaving fake reviews.

Reviewers find reviewing an important and rewarding activity, but the work is almost invisible to the outside world, and hardly ever rewarded. The Reviewer Recognition Platform is designed to change that.

The only sites that I know of that give free kids stuff are the ones that giveaway baby stuff like diapers. I have heard of people who contact toy companies directly and were able to get free toys for their kids to “test”. Other than that, I don’t know of any. I’ll update this page if I find any.

Hi Megan, great article. A lot of useful insights and tips here. Amazon really turned the seller world upside down when they banned incentivized reviews, but there is always a work around, as you have outlined above. Thanks

If Amazon actually made it as easy to post reviews about the shipping and purchase process as for products themselves, then I would believe they care about that. But they don’t because they don’t want their own problems highlighted. It’s not as if this was unintentional; Bezos’ “Iron Rule” is not that ignorant.

Since Amazon is famous for its extensive line of products, their low prices, and great convenience, this news put their customer’s trust, one of Amazon’s core assets, on the line. They needed to fix this, or else, their business would be affected.

I tried this with some success, but only got 10% or less who actually reviewed the book. For the most part, it was a successful effort as I got realistic reviews and many people did like the book. BUT, there are some wild and crazy folks out there who do things like complain that on page ten you used the word rouge and they don’t like that word. Or who find two grammar mistakes and claim it makes the book unreadable and so they give you a 2 star review. That’s okay, because that is the person’s honest opinion, but I finally got tired of these folks, and of the folks who took a free copy and then had not reviewed the book six months later. I am going to give up on this self-publishing thing, though I admit it has been fun.
